Performing "Free Med" on NeoFest on Zoom on 11-20-2020

"My son, the doctor," is a popular opening to friends asking for free medical advice at gatherings from their doctor, nurse, or other professional relative. We all have seen this over and over.

I never sought diagnoses from my professional friends, but I did get tired of my nurse and doctor friends asking me questions about whatever I had sought medical treatment for -- reasonable questions that I could never answer because I had never asked the doctor. This in part may be due to the fact that underneath this reasonably intelligent exterior is a woman that really only wants to hear that everything is fine or going to be fine easily.

So I started calling up a nurse friend before I saw my doctor to write down what questions I should be asking him. I would always start these conversations saying, "I'm calling for Doctor Marian to help me figure out what questions I should ask Dr. X. I'm seeing him tomorrow." My friend passed a few years ago and I miss her input to all parts of my life.

I asked the brilliant Scott Mullen to write me a monologue about a mother seeking free medical advice from her son, the doctor. Once again he wrote me an incredible monologue for me to perform in this Neofest with my Neo Ensemble Theatre LA group. You can watch it on my website here, on my Monologues page.
